On the 4th Oct., 1899, the Board received a letter from
the Commissioners with reference to the Public Inquiry to be
held with regard to Penge, with a view to the preparation of a
Draft Order in Council, in accordance with section 20 of the
Act.
The Board were informed that the Penge Vestry and
Ratepayers desired to be constituted an Urban District
Council, and on the 18th October the Board passed the following
resolution:—
Resolved unanimously, that the Lewisham Board of Works,
whilst they would regret, on personal grounds, the severance
of their connection with their colleagues at present representing
that portion of the District known as the Hamlet of
Penge, cordially concur with the Penge Vestry and Ratepayers
in their desire to be constituted an Urban District
Council.
The Board also instructed the Clerk to attend the inquiry
on their behalf, and authorized him to inform the
Assistant Commissioner, who held the inquiry, of the resolution.
A copy of it was also forwarded to the London County
Council in reply to a letter received from them upon the
subject.
The Board in January, 1900, received a letter from the
Commissioners enclosing copy resolution passed by the Ratepayers
of Penge, and asking for representations from this
Board as to the Hamlet being constituted part of the new
Borough of Lewisham, and the Board in reply referred the
Commissioners to the reslutions of the Lewisham and Penge
Vestries forwaided by those bodies respectively, and to the
Board's resolution of the 18th Oct., 1899, which was presented
to the Assistant Commissioner on the occasion of the inquiry
at Penge. The Board subsequently received a further letter,
23rd Feb., from the Commissioners stating that they had
come to the conclusion that Penge should be separated from
the County of London, and be made to form part of the
County of Kent, and be constituted an Urban District.
