An arrangement was made with the South Metropolitan Gas
Company in December last to substitute Incandescent burners for
the ordinary flat flame burners in the public street lamps. By this
arrangement the Company will supply and maintain the new
burners, and supply and fit new mantles whenever required, at a
fixed cost of £2 10s. per lamp per annum. This charge of course
includes lighting, extinguishing, cleaning, and maintenance as
before; if, however, the Board terminate this agreement before the
Company have been fully recouped for their outlay, the Board
will have to pay any balance that may be outstanding. By this
