STREET LIGHTING.
There are 957 ordinary Street Lamps in the Lewisham division
that are lighted, extinguished, cleaned, painted, maintained,
and supplied with gas by the South Metropolitan Gas Company,
33 special Lamps, and one at the Urinal at the White Hart p.h.,
one.half of the cost of which is paid by the brewers, Messrs. Whit.
bread & Co. There are also 132 Incandescent Lamps of an improved
pattern, which are lighted by the South Metropolitan Gas
Company. There are 87 ordinary public street Lamps that are
lighted, maintained, &c., by the Crystal Palace District Gas Com
pany.
The charge made by the South Metropolitan Gas Company
from Lady.day till Michaelmas was £3 2s Od. per lamp per
annum when it was reduced to £3 0s. 3d., but for the quarter
ending Lady.day, 1900 it was increased to £3 3s. 9d. The
Crystal Palace District Gas Company's charge was £3 2s. 10d. per
lamp per annum till Michaelmas last, when it was reduced to
£3 1s. 3d., and no increase has since been made.
For the purpose of improving the lighting of the District,
and in consequence of making up new streets, it was found
necessary to move 49 lamps into more suitable positions.
