Pence and Bell Green Sewer.
In January proceedings were commenced by the Beckenhara
Local Board against this Board, under the Rivers Pollution
Prevention Act, 1876, in relation to an alleged pollution
of the Pool River by sewage from the storm water overflows
in this sewer. The Board, in consequence, decided to close
the overflows, and to carry out certain surface drainage
works to carry off the water in storms.
The Board have since decided to carry out further works
for taking up a larger quantity of the surface water.
The difficulty of disposing of the surface water is in
great measure due to the insufficiency of the Ravensbourne
and Sydenham Main Sewer, and the Board have made a
special representation to the London County Council on this
subject, the Main Sewer being vested in that body.
The attention of the Council had been previously called
to the subject of the insufficiency of this sewer.
Sewerage Works.
The Surveyor, in his report, refers to the construction
of the new sewer in Stanatead Road and Forest Hill (see
Surveyor's Report, page 14). This is one of the most important
Sewer works undertaken by the Board during the year
for the improvement and relief of one of the most rapidly increasing
parts of the District. The old sewer in Stanstead
Road was one of the first sewerage works carried out by the
Board after their constitution in 1855, nearly 40 years ago,
and it will now be retained as a storm water sewer.
General Subjects.
The Board, during the year, received and dealt with
numerous letters from the Board of Trade, the Local Government
Board, the London County Council, and from Metropolitan
Vestries and District Boards and other Boards,
relating to matters of business and general interest to the
Metropolis.
The Board also received and dealt with a large number
of letters from residents relating to numerous and varied
