the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway for the purchase
of land at Forest Hill, and another Bill was deposited by the
South Eastern Railway for the purchase of houses, &c., at
Blackheath.
FLOODING, FRONTAGE LINES, IMPROVEMENTS, &c.
Under the h'-ading of Surface Water Drainage I have described
what was done during the year relative to flooding.
A very great road improvement, near Dartmouth House,
Dartmouth Row, was carried out during the year. The roadway
being widened on an average 11 feet for a distance of about 272
feet. The Earl of Dartmouth gave up the land and built a portion
of the boundary wall. The B .-ml, at their cost, completed
the wall and made up the widened road and footpath. Another
improvement, at the top of Morden Hill, and near the same place,
was projected bat not completed. It is proposed to widen the
roadway of Morden Hill, at the junction of Dartmouth Row,
10 feet for a distance of about 250 feet. In this case the Earl
of Dartmouth will build the whole of the boundary wall, the
Board making up the road and footpath.
A great deal of correspondence took place with the County
Council relative to widening the Beckwiham Road, Penge, along
Mr. I Lee's Estate, formerly the Penge Nursery. I made several
plans and attended at the County Council relative to the subject.
I expect the matter will soon be arranged.
There were twelve communications received from the Superintending
Architect to the County Council asking suggestions
on applications relative to building beyond the general line, &c.,
under the 75th and other sections of the Metropolis Local
Management Acts. I made reports on the whole of them, and I
append a table to this report shewing how each application was
dealt with. Several new streets were sanctioned and resanctioned.
I also append a list of them.
Ninety-two notices were sent to builders and others for
mencing building operations before giving notice to the Board;
summonses were taken out for this and other offences, and convictions
obtained.
A number of trees were planted in the public roads; in some
cases to replace old ones, and a large number of street name
tablets were fixed.
