The Sewers named in this Table make collectively 2927 feet
run of 3 feet G inches by 2 feet 4 inches brick and concrete sewer,
2568 feet run of 18 inch pipe sewer, 3797 feet run of 15 inch
pipe sewers, and 10,057 feet run of 12 inch pipe sewers, in addition
to those already maintained by the Board.
Probably the most important sewer completed during the
year was the 18-inch pipe from Adenmore Gardens, Catford, to
the brick sewer in Brockley Lane. The work was carried out by
Messrs. Bath and Blackmore. The pipes were laid on a cushion of
cement concrete. As I expected a good deal of water from the river
I had all the joints caulked with tow, and it answered very well.
A great deal of time was taken up during the year in investigating
the cause of the unpleasant smell arising from the ventilators
ol the Westbourne Road, Church Yale, and Perry Vale Sewers.
My reports upon the subject will be found at pages 238 and 279
oi the printed Minutes, 1883. In these reports I state, as my
opinion, that the hot liquor discharged from Messrs. Morgan
Brothers Brewery was, to a large extent, the cause of the smells
complained of.
