The Sydenham Bridge Improvement was completed daring
the year. This is by for the most costly improvment the Board
have undertaken. The Brockley Lane Improvement, also a most
important one, was finished. There is now a 50 feet road from
the boundary with Deptford to the Inn locally known as the
" Brockley Jack." The importance of having the main art- rial
roads of the District 50 feet wide cannot he over-stated, and
in my opinion the Board show great judgment in securing
for the public the advantages of wide thoroughfares wherever
possible. It may be said that the wide rood is not wanted in
Brockley Lane at the present time, but it' it were left until the
traffic actually required it, the land would then be in the hands of
speculative builders, and the additional land could only be obtained
by paying an enormous price for it. The Karl St. Germans and
the Governors of Christ's Hospital gave the land for the improvement.
The drainage and laying-out of the Public recreation Ground,
Sydenham, was commenced upon the 2nd November, and the work
actively proceeded with.
Referring to my Report of last year, I regret very much that
the project of constructing a Swimming Bath, near the Chnnohmeadow,
Lewisham, has been given up. There was a difficulty in
obtaining the ground. I hope, however, another site will be
found. I prepared the drawings of an enlarged Bridge under
the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway, at !-*■ r< -r Hill
Station, and estimated the cost of carrying out the work ifl
£3400 with a timber platform carrying th> permanent way, and
£3,800 if constructed with buckle-plates. As the Railway Company
contemplate some alteration in the Station arrangements, it
maybe some time before the improvement can be carried out.
