Rain fell on 151 days during the above period. There Were
5 inches less rain this year than in the corresponding period
last year. During the year the steam road roller has been
regularly used and been of great service.
ROAD WATERING.
The Blackheath Roads and the greater portion of the
Lewisham Roads were watered by burses belonging to the Board
Mr. Lane, of Rushey Green, supplied horses to water a small
portion of the Lewisham Roads, at a contract price of 9s. per day
for horse and driver. In Sydenham and Forest Hill, Mr. Stimpson.
supplied horses and men for watering the roads at 9s. per day.
Mr. Puplett was contractor for watering the Lower Sydenham
roads at the same price. In the Hamlet of Penge the contract for
the supply of horses and men for road watering was let to Mr.
Bailey, at 9s. 6d. per day for horse and man. In Lewisham some
new vans were purchased from Messrs. Bayley, and one of
the two horse vans, hired with the option of purchase. This
van watered the road from Rushey Green to Southend, and it did
the work so well that I recommended the Board to purchase it,
which was done. Unfortunately, these vans cannot be used in
roads where there is much traffic. The vans are constructed very
wide and by driving down the centre of the road a 30 feet road
can be watered the entire width at once.
