Guildhall, E.C.
8/7/ October, 1884.
Sir,
In reply to your letter of the 8th August (76,661 K 2)
enclosing copy of a letter from the Lambeth Vestry, respecting
certain rags from Marseilles, alleged to have been landed at
Lambeth wharf, I beg to state that the circumstances in respect
thereto, have been fully investigated by the Port of London
Sanitary Committee, who now instruct me to say that the bales of
rags in question (previously disinfected) were intended to be
destroyed unopened, each bale being lifted from the barge into
the furnace, and the Committee feel satisfied that the course,
which, it was suggested should be carried out, was a wise one, and
free from all possible risk.
In deference, however, to the wishes of the Vestry of Lambeth,
the Committee reluctantly abandoned the suggestion, and
disposed of the rags in another way.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
To the Secretary of the John B. Monckton.
Local Govcrmcnt Board.
