4 DECEMBER, 1889.
December 4th, 1889.
To the Vestry of the Hamlet of Mile End Old Town.
Gentlemen,
I beg to report to you that I have been, requested by
the Sanitary Committee to take the necessary steps to
close No. 89, Greenfield Street, which is at present roofless
owing to a fire.
The ground and first floor rooms of which are at the
present time inhabited.
On examining these rooms carefully I find that at the
present time, there is no nuisance which is injurious to
health existing, but as a nuisance is likely to arise at any
moment should we have any wet weather, I would beg
to recommend that the Vestry make an order empowering
me to take proceedings to close the house when
necessary.
My attention has been called by Mr. Cox, your Sanitary
Inspector, to the condition of the following houses
in Old Church Road, viz.:
No. 55. Ground floor room—Ceiling and walls dirty,
plaster of walls very defective.
Passage leading to closet dirty.
Staircase dirty.
Walls and ceiling of bedroom dirty.
In its present condition I consider this house is injurious
to health, and if not remedied within seven days, proceedings
should be taken to close it.
No. 57. Ground floor front room—Plaster very defective.
Back room ground floor—Walls damp and dirty.
I would recommend an order be made to cleanse the
house, and remove cause of dampness.
No. 59. Ground floor back room—Walls damp, plaster
falling off.
Staircase dirty.
Back bedroom—Roof defective, walls dirty and damp.
The closet is in ruinous condition, and is without
water supply.
I consider the house to be in such a condition as to
require closing without delay, it being injurious to health
and unfit for habitation.
No. 61.
This house has been closed for seven months, but was
let a few days since, and is in such a filthy condition as
to necessitate immediate closing.
Ground floor front room—Flooring broken, plaster
falling off walls, and walls very damp and dirty.
Back room ground floor—Walls damp and dilapidated,
ceiling dirty plaster falling off, sashes
broken, no glass in them.
