" Board of Works for the Limehouse District.
" White Horse Street,
"Commercial Road, E.
"21st March, 1889.
"Dear Sir,
"Maintenance of Main Roads in the Metropolis as
"affected by the Local Government Act, 1888.
"Referring to the Conference which took place at the
"Chelsea Town Hall on the 14th February last upon the
"above subject, at which Delegates from the different
"Districts in the Metropolis were present, and at which
"certain Resolutions were passed, I have to inform you
"that the subject has been under the consideration of
"my Board, and I am directed to suggest that the Vestry
"of Mile End Old Town should appoint 3 representatives
"to meet other delegates, appointed by East End Districts,
"in Conference at the Offices of this Board for the pur"pose
of considering the question, and determining, if
"possible, what combined steps should be taken to obtain
"from the County Council a proper and just recognition
"of the claims of the East End of London, in respect of
"the future maintenance of Disturnpiked and Main
"Roads.
"Please inform me the names and addresses of the
"Delegates who may be appointed by your Board as
"early as possible.

That your Committee resolved to recommend—That 3
delegates be appointed as suggested and that such be Mr.
Loftus, (Chairman), and Mr. Hirst, (Vice-chairman of your
Committee), and Mr. Knight, your Surveyor.
(2) That your Surveyor reported as follows :
"I beg to say I have inquired of the men engaged
"on Messrs. Woodham & Fry's works and am informed
"by the men engaged in paving and ramming that they
"are paid by the hour.
"The carting is most likely done by the yard, but no
"objection can be made to this course."
(3) That your Committee at a former meeting having inspected
the following places resolved to recommend—
(a) That the channels of the following streets be paved, viz :
(1) Jubilee Street, between Adelina Grove and Hawkins
Street, the estimated cost being £"40.
(2) Clark Street, between Sidney Street and Bedford
Street, the estimated cost being £32, and
(3) Nelson Street, the estimated cost being £75.
(b) That the crossings not before constructed on the west
