Population.
In my last Annual Report I referred to the disparity between
the enumerated population at the last Census and to the estimated
population of Camberwell for 1928, as provided by the RegistrarGeneral.
The Census population of Camberwell in 1921 was returned
at 267,198, and in the years that followed to 1926 an annual
progressive increase was reported, when the population was stated
to be 275,400. In the following year it was computed that the
population of Camberwell had decreased by 4,300, and that during
the next 12 months there had been a further fall of 10,700. In
my comments of these figures I mentioned certain factors which
undoubtedly influenced the population figure, and stated it was
difficult to believe that the effect of those factors could possibly
result in a difference in population of over 10,000 in one year and
15,000 less than two years previously.
The Registrar-General's estimate for 1929 furnishes information
that the population of Camberwell has fallen still further
and is 3,500 less than the previous year's figure, viz., 256,900, as
compared with 260,400 in 1928, and 10,298 fewer than the Census
enumerated in 1921.
As I stated last year, fortunately the time is approaching
when an accurate representation of the position will become
known, but in the meanwhile, and as in former years the population
as estimated by the Registrar-General for 1929 has been
used at the request of the Ministry of Health throughout this
report in calculating the birth and death rates.
