The births were more numerous by 146 than they were in
1886. In Dulwich there was an increase of 23, in Peckham
of 119, and in St George's of 94, while in Camberwell there
was a falling off of 90.

The births per 1,000 for 1886 and 1887 respectively are
shown in Table VI. I made the following remarks in my
last report:—" It will be observed that there has been a
general and considerable diminution of the birth-rate for
1886 as compared with that for 1885. The birth-rate of
Dulwich was, as it always has been, very low, and that of
Peckham has fallen so much that it adds probability to what
other circumstances suggest, namely, that the population of
this sub-district has not been increasing at its former rate,
and that it is now considerably less than the estimate." This
fall in the death-rate has, on the whole, continued; for, as
will be seen, the death-rate has fallen in Camberwell, in
Peckham, and in the whole Parish. It has remained stationary
in St. George's, and only in Dulwich has risen.
