During the year 1886 (see Table IX.) 7,303 children
(3,742 boys and 3,561 girls) were born in the Parish. Of
these, 84 belonged to Dulwich; 2,453 to Camberwell; 2,586
to Peckham; and 2,180 to St. George's. There was a falling
off of 8 in Dulwich, and of 99 in Peckham. But there was
an increase of 87 in St. George's, and of 150 in Camberwell.
For the whole Parish there was an increase of 130.
Table V.—Births in Camberwell and its Sub Districts.
Dulwich. | Camberwell. | Peckham | St. George's | Parish. | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1885 | 92 | 2,303 | 2,685 | 2,093 | 7,173 |
1886 | 84 | 2,453 | 2,586 | 2,180 | 7,303 |
Difference | 8 | + 150 | 99 | + 87 | + 130 |
The births per 1,000, for 1885 and 1886 respectively,
are shewn in Table VI. It will be observed that there has
been a general and considerable diminution of the birth rate
for 1866 as compared with that for 1885. The birth rate
of Dulwich was, as it always has been, very low, and that of
Peckham has fallen so much, that it adds probability, to what
other circumstances suggest, namely, that the population of
this sub district has not been increasing at its former rate, and
that it is now considerably less than the estimate.
