General shows, in this year (as compared with the annual
average of the preceding ten years and allowing for increase
of population) there was a diminution of deaths, from
Small-pox of 1,194, from Measles of 321, from Scarlet
Fever of 1,452, from continued Fevers of 483, and from
Diphtheria and Croup of 87.
The populations of London and of its five groups of
districts, as determined at the Census of 1881, were as
follows:—

The numbers have increased generally since this time,
and the Registrar-General estimates that in the middle of
the year 1886 the population of the Metropolis had reached
4,149,533, of which number 1,954,346 were males, and
2,195,187 were females.
Table II. gives the births and deaths, together with the
births and deaths per 1,000, for the whole of London and
for its groups of districts:—
