These figures represent the mean population of
Camberwell, and of its several sub-divisions for the
year 1881, and are those, therefore, with which the
deaths must be compared in order to determine the
death-rates. But before we can make this comparison
(as far at least as concerns the sub-divisions of
the Parish) we must make a correction in respect of
the distribution of the deaths. The sub-district of
Camberwell contains the Workhouse and two Lunatic
Asylums, the deaths in which Institutions amounted
in 1881 to no less than 371. But these deaths,
though occurring in the Camberwell sub-district,
belong not specially to that sub-district, but pretty
nearly equally to all parts of the Parish. In order,
therefore, to put this sub-district on equal terms
with the other sub-districts, it is necessary to deduct
these deaths from the returns of the Camberwell
sub-district, and to distribute them in fair proportion
among all of them. This I have done (as shown in
Table VI.) by dividing the 371 deaths among the
