one of ,58,853 in Peckham, and one of 51,557 in St.
George's. Now, as I shall presently explain, these
estimates are certainly fallacious. But I will accept
them for the present, and proceed to determine the
death-rate in accordance with them.
But before the deaths can be fairly utilized for
ascertaining the death-rate of the sub-districts of
Camberwell, it is necessary, as before stated, to make
some re-arrangement of them. The sub-district of
Camberwell includes the Workhouse and two Lunatic
Asylums, in which, collectively, no less than 433 deaths
occurred in the course of the year. But these deaths
belong (in estimating the death-rate) not more to the
sub-district in which they are included than to the
other sub-districts of the Parish ; and hence it becomes
necessary to distribute them proportionately among
the several districts. For this purpose I have deducted
them from the returns for the Camberwell sub-district,
and have then distributed them among all the
districts, in proportion to the number of deaths
(exclusive of them) returned for each. The result is
shewn in the accompanying table.
