Plant for the Season 1879-80, which has thus been
augmented, is now as follows:—

Horses
It is gratifying to announce that during the past
year the stud of Horses has kept in excellent health;
very few casualties (and those of a light nature) have
occurred, and the loss of two only has taken place.
This, out of a stud of over Sixty Horses, must be
considered satisfactory.
Cost of
Horse keep.
The cost for keep of the Horses has, consequent
upon the lower price of Fodder, been somewhat less
than the previous year, being £48 per Horse per
annum as against £53 in 1877-8.
The total cost of this Department for the past
year (inclusive of Wheelwrights' and Smiths' work,
Repairs to Road Implements and Tools, also Shoeing,
and all expenses,) is £9,460, or £150 per mile, but in
this amount is included the cost of Cartage of Materials,
Road Rolling, and all incidental Works, which under
the former system would have been paid for to the
Contractors, in addition to the Contract amount, for
