"tion of this special description of work, and which I
"have, as your Surveyor, for years past been anxious
"to initiate, but which, from the immense amount of
"work from time to time undertaken by the Vestry
"during the last few years, I have refrained from
"pressing on your notice. I refer to that most
"desirable work, viz. :—Channelling the water tables
"or sides of the Roads next the kerbs of the
"Footways. The necessity and ultimate economy
"of such work, especially on roads having steep
"gradients, cannot be questioned ; but the mileage
"being great, the cost will be great also. I there"fore
now only refer to the subject as one which
"should at no distant date be entertained. For
"the present it may be considered only necessary for
"me to show the approximate cost to be met
"whenever this subject is grappled with, which is as
"follows:—
"The length of roads in this Parish now under
"the charge of the Vestry is about 56 miles, making,
"on both sides, 112 miles of channelling to be laid.
"The approximate cost of which would be about
"£1,300 per mile run of road—say £70,000."
