evident. Small-pox, however, was fatal in a remarkable
degree. In the autumn of 1870, as you know,
an unusually severe epidemic of small-pox began to
prevail in London, but at that time the epidemic can
scarcely be said to have extended to Camberwell.
But in the first quarter of 1871 it caused 23 deaths
in our parish; in the second quarter, 59; in the
third, 39; and in the fourth, 32. The following
tables show the mortality from small-pox in the year
1871, for successive periods of three months; first
for London and its five groups of districts, and
second for Camberwell and its sub-districts; and
from them may be gathered something of the course
and severity of the epidemic:—
