Should a heavy fall take place, it will be necessary
to employ all the men that can be obtained to clear it
away, and as there are about 84 miles of footway in
the parish, it is obvious that even if hundreds of men
are employed, it must be a work of considerable time
and difficulty.
The difficulty, expense and almost impossibility of
complying with this requirement in the case of snow
storms appears to be recognised by the executive
officers of all the Local Authorities, and at a conference
held at the Paddington Yestry Hall it was resolved to
approach the President of the Local Government Board
with a view to the repeal of the section, so far as it
relates to snow, &c., but the President replied that as
the words had been inserted in the Committee of the
House of Commons in opposition to his advice, he did
not feel justified in taking action in the matter.
The practice of costermongers and others of throwing
refuse, vegetables, fish, &c., into the roadways has
rendered a considerable number of prosecutions necessary,
the Works Committee making it a practice to prosecute
in every case reported.
In every case convictions were obtained, and penalties
inflicted by the magistrates.
Watering.
Mr. Crane, the contractor for No. 1 district, and Mr.
Stevens, the contractor for Nos. 2 and 3 districts were
each fined £5 for default in watering the streets.
The quantity of water used for street watering
during the season was 6,169,000 gallons, and its cost
£220 14s. The rent of and repairs to meters amounted
to £38 19s,
