HOUSING OF THE WORKING CLASSES
ACT.
The Boundary Street Scheme drags its slow course ; the County
Council is gradually acquiring the property, and compensating
the owners. Numbers of houses have been closed, but unfortunately
demolition has not been commenced. It is, in my opinion,
not sufficient to merely nail up the doors and windows of empty
premises, the houses must be either demolished, or hoarded up, or
they are certain to be taken possession of by squatters, who will
have to be ejected again and again. Good work is being done
under part two of the Act, and the appearance of many streets in
ithe Parish has been materially altered under its provisions.
Rows of miserable dens, utterly unfit for habitation, have been
demolished, and sound, healthy dwellings for working people have
been erected in their places: Hart's Lane, Brady's Buildings,
Simpson's Place, Columbia Road, Ezra Street, and Bonner Lane,
are cases in point. Proceedings are shown in a tabulated form
below.
