Brady's
Buildings.
It was proposed to deal with Brady's Buildings as a
now street, with a view to paving the same at the cost
of the owner, but before proceeding, the attention
of the Sanitary Committee was called to the condition
of the houses, and the Sanitary Committee, after viewing
them, came to the conclusion that they were unfit for
human habitation. The owner thereupon caused them
to be demolished.
The owner then proposed to make a new street, 20
feet wide, across the site, to connect Florida Street and
Ivimy Street. This would have necessitated the
demolition of some more very old houses, and would
have been a great improvement. Application was made
to the London County Council for their permission, but
they declined to give it.
An amended application was then made to the
Council for permission to form a street 20 feet wide
across the site of Brady's Buildings, to connect Hart's
Lane and Robert Street.
This the Council declined to approve.
The Vestry, feeling that a great improvement was
being blocked, appointed a deputation to wait upon the
Building Act Committee of the Council, to urge them
to re-consider the matter. The whole of the facts were
placed before the Committee by the deputation, but the
Committee declined to alter their previous decision.
The owner of the property is advised that he has the
right to erect houses upon the sites of the houses he
pulled down, and is proceeding to do so.
The effect of the Council's decision is that a crooked
court, about ten feet wide (a cul-de-sac), will be perpetuated,
while a straight, paved thoroughfare, twenty
feet wide, with two-storey houses on each side, might
have occupied the site.
