REPORT
Gentlemen,
I propose to place before you in this Annual Report the
Vital and Mortal Statistics of the Parish of St. Matthew, Bethnal
Green, for the Registration year 1887, which terminated on the
31st day of December last.
POPULATION.
The population of the district has remained practically stationary
during the past year, for the births, deaths, and marriages are all
fewer than they were in 1886, and the number of inhabited houses,
as returned by the Rate Collectors, shew very small variations.
In my last Report I estimated the population of Bethnal Green,
in the middle of the year 1886, at 129,895, and I have calculated
the Statistics for the year now under consideration upon the same
basis.
The area of Bethnal Green is 755 acres, about 17 of which are
covered with water. The number of inhabited houses is 18,493.
This gives a ratio of seven persons to each house, and 172 to eaoh
acre.
DEATHS.
The number of deaths registered in the parish during the year
was 2836, against 2992 in the previous year. This gives a decrease
of 156; but it includes 145 non-parishioners, who have died in
Bethnal Green Hospitals. As these people, at the time of their
death, were resident in the Hospitals of the Parish for the purposes
of medical treatment, their deaths are excluded from the enumeration
; on the other hand, I have received information from the
