A system of numbering the workmen has been
adopted, a brass badge, bearing the letters S. M. B. G.
and the number being supplied to each man, and is
worn during the working hours. Any men who may
misconduct themselves can thus be easily identified.
By section 76 of the Metropolis Local Management
Acts, all persons, seven days at least before beginning
to dig out or lay the foundation of any now house or
building, or to rebuild any house or building, are
required to give notice to the Vestry. Under this
section two prosecutions were undertaken; in one
instance the builder was fined £1 and costs, and in the
other £10 and costs.
Buildings.
The re-erection of the Wiltshire Brewery Company's
Premises, in Hackney Road, having been commenced,
it was found that it was the intention of the architect to
carry the front portion of the building up several storeys
in height, instead of one storey, as before, the upper
portion of the building projecting beyond the buildings
on both sides of it. The attention of the Metropolitan
Board of Works was called to the matter, and after
proceedings had been taken against the builders at the
Police Court, the architect applied to the Metropolitan
Board for permission to bring out the upper portion of
the building 6 feet beyond the original line, instead of
11 feet as first intended, and this application was
granted.
The barriers, which have been erected by the
Metropolitan Board of Works, in Green street, are still
maintained ; but it is hoped that sufficient progress will
shortly have been made with the Artizans' Dwellings
Green Street
Improvement.
