LAND AT SOUTH EAST CORNER OF
GIBRALTAR WALK.
The piece of Land was with other property bought for the
Bethnal Green Road Improvement by the Metropolitan Board of
Works from the late Sir John Tyrrell, and was dedicated as part
of a highway with a view of a future widening of Gibraltar Walk
throughout.
In July a Mr. Henry Hughes put up a notice board claiming
the land as his Freehold, and offering to let it. A person of the
name of Garvey assumed to act as Hughes's agent, and on his
behalf claimed the ground.
Subsequently in the month of November, claim was also
made to the piece of land by Caroline Blumson and James
Westover. A board stating the land was to let was put up on
and a post and rail fence erected round the land by them or their
agents. The board and fencing were removed by the Vestry's
workmen. Upon an attempt being subsequently made to dig up
and remove the iron posts upon the land belonging to the Vestry
an interim injunction was applied for and granted on the 29th
November.
Early in December, William Deakins, who represented he acted
as agent for Catherine Blumson and James Westover, in breach
of the injunction caused a considerable quantity of ballast to be
shot upon the land. It appeared W. Deakins received payment
from contractors for permission to so shoot ballast.
Application was made to commit William Deakins for contempt.
An order was made, under which he was subsequently arrested and
detained in prison for 21 days, being released upon making
apology for his contempt and undertaking to commit no further
breach of the injunction.
Proceedings incident to the application for an injunction to
restrain Caroline Blumson, James Westover, William Deakins,
Henry Hughes and Francis Joseph Garvey from using the piece
of land otherwise than as a highway are pending.
