nominated to co-operate with the officer appointed by the Home
Office. It was suggested by the Committee's Report that four
members of the Yestry should be nominated to co-operate, and if
the Homo Secretary assented that Mr. Staines and Mr. Wilson
should be nominated as well as Mr. Hilditch and Mr. Forrest.
Also on the recommendation of the Committee it was referred to a
Special Committee, consisting of Messrs. Francis, Ewin, Jones,
James Bishop, Perrin, and Abbott, to make with the Clerk
preparation for conducting the inquiry and to obtain evidence,
instruct counsel, and do what might seem requisite for the effective
conduct of the inquiry.
The Homo Office did not accept the suggestion that four instead
of two members of the Vestry should be appointed to co-operate
in holding the inquiry.
Mr. D. Cubitt Nichols, of 3, Howard Street, Strand, Surveyor,
and Mr. Shirley F. Murphy, late the Medical Officer of St. Pancras
Parish, were appointed by the Home Office to hold the inquiry.
The inquiry was held on the days mentioned in the Report.
On several other days Mr. Cubitt Nichols and Mr. Murphy
inspected various parts of the Parish. Mr. Hilditch and Mr.
Forrest were present throughout and accompanied Mr. Nicholls
and Mr. Murphy on the several inspections made by them.
The Report dated the 17th March was presented to Parliament
and ordered to be printed, but for some reason unexplained the
printing was delayed and copies could not be obtained till June,
1888. A copy will be found on page 31.
