The Vestry and other Vestries and District Boards in the East
of London presented simultaneously to the Metropolitan Board of
Works memorials urging that Board to obtain power to erect a
low-level Bridge across the Thames, from Rotherhithe to Wapping.
In November a letter was received from the Metropolitan Board
stating that having on the 14th October considered several
requests for improvements in various parts of London, the Board
had come to the conclusion that it would not apply to Parliament
next Session for power to carry out any improvements in respect
of which the Vestries or District Boards interested were not
prepared to contribute part of the cost, and that therefore the
Board could not submit to Parliament any proposal for the
construction of a Bridge across the Thames from Eotherhithe to
Wapping.
