DISINFECTION OF CABS.
A communication was received from the Commissioner of Police
stating that he was advised that the Sanitary Inspector is the
proper person to disinfect cabs which may have conveyed persons
suffering from contagious or infectious disease, and asking for
information whereby drivers of Hackney carriages may know
where and at what cost a cab so used could be disinfected, so that
they may be able to satisfy the police when inquiry is made of
them.
I brought the subject before the Sanitary Committee and asked
for permission to undertake such disinfection free of charge; the
Committee however declined to take the responsibility of granting
such permission without a special resolution of the Vestry.
The subject was discussed by the Society of Medical Officers
of Health, and the Council reported that although the risk of cab
infection is very slight, owing to the general use of ambulances,
yet that it is very desirable that the sanitary authorities should, when
occasion requires it, disinfect cabs free of charge, and that a certificate
should be given to the driver also free of charge to the
effect that his cab had undergone a process of disinfection.
