Throwing
refuse in
streets.
Considerable nuisance and frequently danger is caused
by carmen and others depositing refuse in the streets,
particularly at night, and notwithstanding the assistance
given by the police in these matters, it is only on rare
occasions that the offenders are discovered. Eight cases
of this kind were reported during the year, and in only
one instance could sufficient evidence be obtained to
justify a prosecution, and in this case a conviction was
obtained.
Arbery road
The amount (£611 12s. 6d.) of the apportionment
having been collected, the work was carried out. The
cost amounted to £572 17s. 3d., thus leaving a balance
of £38 15s. 3d. due to the owners. An apportionment
of this sum was prepared, and the respective balances
returned to the owners of the property.
Mansford
street.
The whole of the amount apportioned, viz., £887 0s. 1d.,
has been collected. The work has been partially carried
out; but some doubt having been expressed as to the
nature of the foundation of the road, the final coating
of granite has been postponed for the present.
SEWERS.
Flushing, &c
The cost of the water used for flushing the pipe sewers
was £26 17s. 0d. The gullies and some of the market
places were also flushed with a solution of J eye's Purifier
during the hot weather.
House
drainage
Connections were made with the sewers for the purpose
of draining 124 houses and buildings, the cost being
borne by the owners of the property.
Public
urinals.
The cost of the water supply to the public urinals for
the year has been £52 10s. 0d., as against £88 5s. 6d.
for the preceding year. The difference is brought about
by the reconstruction of the urinal at Austin street,
where a great waste of water had previously occurred.
