The snow storms have again caused considerable'
labour and anxiety; the first, which happened on the
evening of Sunday, December 26th, being the most
severe. On Monday, December 27th (Boxing-day) all
the men who could be obtained were employed in clearing
the channels and making crossings ; but it is a singular
fact, that notwithstanding the alleged distress, only two
additional men applied for work on that day. On the
following days all the men who could be obtained were
employed.
Snow storms
I am strongly of opinion that it is essential that the
greatest promptitude should be exercised in dealing with
snowfalls. The first day's work is of much more value
than many subsequent days' labour, more especially
when the snow has been heaped and become solid.
The first care should be to clear the channels, crossings,
and the centres of the main roads. The use of a little
salt on the paved roads is also of much service. Tho
road sweeping machines are, as the thaw progresses,
invaluable.
The second storm, on 15th March, also caused great
inconvenience.
The steam roller was used for the purpose of melting
large quantities of snow at Hereford street. It would
be difficult to know what to do with it if it were not for
this mode of dealing with it. The condition of the roads
in the outskirts would render it impossible to cart it to
the ordinary shoots, and even if expense was not an
object, it would be impossible to obtain sufficient horses
and carts to remove it.
