clauses objected to were, after discussion before the Committee,

FIRE BRIGADE EXPENSES BILL.
Many letters were received expressing various opinions as to the
limit of the rate to be levied, and as to increasing the contributions
by the Insurance Companies. The view adopted by the Vestry
was, "That believing there are necessities for additional means for
extinguishing fires, no opposition be made to the Bill of the
Metropolitan Board of Works in that respect, but believe it would be
unadvisable to impose a further charge upon Insurance Companies."
GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY BILL (MARKETS).
The Bill sought, among other things, Parliamentary Sanction to
an agreement between the persons in whom the franchise granted
by the Spitalfields Market Charter is vested and the Railway
company, providing for the company carrying on the Stratford
Market and re-opening of the Bishopsgate Street Market, with
power to levy tolls.
The Vestry objected to power being given to levy tolls in any
Market. A petition by the Vestry against the grant of such a
power was presented to the House of Commons. The Bill has
passed, but without the Market clauses, so that as far as the public
and the Market Owners are concerned, matters remain as they were.
RE-NAMING, AND RE-NUMBERING STREETS,
LIGHTING, SEWER WORK, AND ROAD WORK.
Particulars as to these matters are given in the Surveyor's
Report.
COMPOSITION RATE.
A copy of the account rendered by Mr. Churchwarden Loveday
will be found at page 36.
A rate at one half-penny in the pound for the then current year
was made by the Vestry on the 21st of October.
