An appearance in opposition to the grant of the Faculty was entered
with the view of the Vestry having an opportunity of being fully
informed as to the necessity of opposing the grant or otherwise. The
plans which were submitted to the Vestry, were referred to the
Works Committee, who reported that the proposed alteration could
be effected without endangering the existing structure, but the cost
of the future repair would probably fall on the Parish, and
recommended that the grant of the Faculty be opposed, unless an
arrangement could be made securing the parishioners against any
increased liabilities by reason of the proposed extension. The
report was approved and adopted; but on a letter from the Yicar,
the matter was referred to a Committee of the Whole Vestry.
Subsequently the Yicar, his Churchwarden, and several other
persons, stated to be interested in the Church, attended the Vestry
and suggested the Vestry should withdraw their opposition to the
grant of a Faculty, as the cost of the alteration would be wholly
borne by voluntary subscriptions, and the possible annual repairs
be very minute, and against the cost of them the Yicar would give
his guarantee. On the recommendation of the Committee of the
Whole Vestry, it was decided that the opposition to the grant of the
Faculty be withdrawn on the offered undertaking by the Yicar beinggiven.
The undertaking is embodied in the Faculty.
HYDE PARK CORNER (NEW STREETS) BILL.
These new streets are partly in the Parish of St. Greorge,
Hanover Square, and partly in the Parish of Saint Martin-in-theFields.
The Metropolitan Board of Works had contributed to the
cost of forming the new streets, but notwithstanding this, the Bill
proposed that the cost of maintaining the new streets should be paid,
not according to the usual course, by Parishes in which the
streets are, but as to a moiety, by the Metropolis generally. The
Vestry objected, and with other Yestries and District Boards
petitioned against the cost of maintenance being borne other than
in the usual way. The Bill as passed provides for the entire cost of
maintenance being defrayed by the two Parishes in which the new
streets are.
