DEATHS OF YOUNG CHILDEEN.
Out of the total number of deaths registered in this district, 1596—
more than half—(51.5 per cent.) were those of young children under
the age of five years.
Assuming that the proportion of young children to adults has been
maintained since the census in 1871 (the figures for 1881 are not
published), the numbers in 1882 would be 19,300. Taking this
estimate as the basis of our calculation, we shew a death rate of 82.6
per thousand children living.
