BIRTHS AND BIRTH RATE.
The number of births registered during the year was 5,256, a rate
of 41 per thousand estimated population. This rate is precisely that
of last year, which was calculated upon the census population ; and as
birth rates are known to vary only very slightly, it shews that my
estimate of population is fairly correct.
The metropolitan birth rate for the corresponding period was 34.3,
a difference in our favour of 6.7.
MARRIAGES.
In Bethnal Green we have 14 churches, 15 chapels, and one
Register office licensed for marriages. Of these there were in the
First quarter 505
Second ,, 658
Third ,, 666
Fourth „ 773
Total 2,602
One fewer than last year.
This indicates a marriage rate of 20.3 to every thousand persons, or,
as each marriage necessitates two persons as contracting parties, 40.6
of every thousand of our population entered the bonds of matrimony.
Of these weddings 53 were civil contracts, and required the
presence of the Registrar in order to render them legal. Half of
them took place in the office of that functionary and the remainder in
dissenting places of worship.
The marriage rate for the whole of the metropolis was 18.2 per
thousand.
DEATHS OF INFANTS
(Under One Year).
Of the total deaths from all causes 27.3 per cent. were those of
infants, aged less than 12 months; for out of 5,256 children born,
886 died before reaching that age, 4,390 surviving. This gives
a death rate, calculated upon the births, of 164.7 per thousand, or of
6.7 per thousand population at all ages.
The diseases most fatal to infants were—Atrophy and Debility, 180;
Bronchitis and Pneumonia, 148; Diarrhoea, 65; Convulsions, 96; Whooping
Cough, 79 ; Premature Birth, 58; Consumption of the Bowels, 35; Suffocation,
35 ; Water on the Brain, 17.
