The Statistics of 144 adult Weavers are, that 7 died in the
Hackney Road, 30 in the Church, 32 in the Town, and 75 in
the Green—that 50 of them lived above 70, 9 above 80,
2 over 90, and 1 to 99 years—that they had a mean age of
61.44 years, or of T44 beyond what, on an average, after the
age of 20, life in England is worth—that 7, or 1 in 20.5 of
the deaths was caused by Epidemics, and 19 or 1 in 7.5 by
Consumption—that 1 died of Exhaustion from Carbuncle,
5 suddenly, and 4 by suicidal means. Generally "the tendency
to suicide is least among persons who carry on occupations
out of doors;" it "is increased five-fold at least by
in-door occupations, and persons in the artizan class are the
most disposed to it."
Out of the 330 individuals who closed their earthly career
in the Public and Private Institutions of Bethnal Green, 254
departed in the Workhouse, 35 in the City of London Hospital,
22 in Bethnal House Asylum, 3 in the Trinity
Ground, 2 in Parmiter's Alms Houses, and 14 in the Model
Lodgings of Columbia Square.
Among the several fatal causes in the Workhouse, 6 of the
Inmates sank from Diarrhoea, 1 from Asiatic Cholera, 11 from
Fever, 1 from Erysipelas, 1 from Scrofula, 13 from Marasmus,
42 from Consumption, 5 from Apoplexy, 14 from Paralysis,
1 from Epilepsy, 1 from Mania, 3 from Convulsions, 1 from
Concussion, 1 from Softening of the Brain, 11 from Diseases
of the Heart and Valves, 6 from Bronchitis, 1 from Pleurisy,
7 from Inflammation of the Lungs, 25 from Asthma, 3 from
Teething, 1 from Strangulated Hernia, 2 from Jaundice, 2
from Bright's Disease, 1 from Exhaustion from Labour, 1
from Carcinoma of the Lower Jaw, 8 from Scirrhus of Breast,
Stomach and other organs, 7 from Abscess of the Neck, Ulcer
of the Leg, and Diseases of the Hip and Spine, 6 from Premature
Births, 5 from Burns and Sudden Deaths, 1 from
Want of Breast Milk, and 66 from Natural Decay.
