to GO, 305 departed hence. And through the fourth and fifth
vicenniads 415 of our population paid the debt we must all
discharge. "Wear and tear, the natural falling off of vitality
and the insidious progress of decay" enabled only 208 to outlive
three score and ten. Of that number, 48 passed beyond
four score, 9 beyond 90, and one nonagenarian to the age of
99, or within one year of " the natural term of human life."
In the four Sub-districts the Vital Summaries varied thus :
—A child was born and a person died out of every 25 and
52 of the living in the Hackney Road; out of 26 and 37 in
the Green; out of 26 and 61 in the Church ; and out of 24
and 48 in the Town. One case of Fever and one of Consumption
occurred to every 1753 and 641 of the population in the
first Sub-district; to 1135 and 276 in the second: to 2320 and
593 in the third; and to 1953 and 596 in the fourth. There
was a death under five years of age among 73 inhabitants in
the Town"; among 93 in the Hackney Road; among 97 in
the Green; and among 106 in the Church. 16.59 years
formed the life-average in the Town; 19.97 years in the
Church; 21.16 years in the Hackney Road; and 32.03 years
in the Green. Of adult life the measure was 51.95 years in
the Town; 52.50 in the Hackney Road; 53.94 in the Church;
and "56.37 in the Green."* In every point of view, excepting
only Consumption and mean age, the Church, when compared
with the rest, attained the highest standard of health ;
its fatality by Fever was least, and it lost fewest children
under five years. Then, again, its death-rate, which was
but 16.4 in 1000, far surpassed those of the other Divisions
and fell below the healthy rate of 17;—above which,
''all the mortality is excessive,"and" may be referred to
artificial causes."
. It must be borne in mind that age is highest in the Green from the excess of
Adults in the Institutions therein contained.
