By the third or Tubercular Class our loss was 384. Scrofula
ended the days of 7, Mesenteric Consumption of 119,
Pulmonary Consumption of 235, and Water on the Brain of
23. Pulmonary Consumption proved fatal to 36 in the first
vicenniad of life, to 120 in the second, to 66 in the third, and
to 13 in the fourth. Its mortality to the living was 1 in 447;
whereas in London it was 1 in 363. Its proportion to each
100 deaths gave a percentage of 10.5, its proportion in London
gave one of 11.8. Among the deaths of the Gentry, Tradesmen
and Artizans, Consumption caused 7.3 per cent. of the
First, 9.7 of the Second, and 109 of the Third. In some of
these "defective ventilation" was doubtless the "preventible
cause, for of all classes of this country, including trades,
occupations and professions, and including also what may be
called the affluent or easy classes, the longest-lived is the
agricultural labourer. The one condition in which he differs
most from all other classes is the amount and the variety of
exercise which he takes in the open air."
By Diseases of the Brain and Nerves (Class the 4th) 252
persons lost their lives; of whom two had passed their 80th
year. Affections of the membranes and substance of the Brain
killed 44, Apoplexy 28, Paralysis 50, Delirium Tremens or
Alcoholism 1, Epilepsy 11, Tetanus or Lock-Jaw 1, Insanity
4, and Convulsions 113.
From Diseases of the Heart in Class 5, the deaths were 62:
Pericarditis, or inflammation of the sac which contains the
heart causing 1, Aneurism, or Rupture of the Aorta, or great
artery causing 2, and other affections of the organ causing 59.
In the subdivisions of the 6th or Pulmonary Class, the
various inflammations and diseases of the windpipe, airpassages,
lining membrane and substance of the lungs terminated
the existence of 441.
Their relative mortality in each
month conjointly with that of the Epidemics and Consumption
differed thus:—
