Bromsgrovc "had 5 children varying from 3 to 10 years of
age; three of them had been vaccinated, the other two had
not. The oldest was attacked by Small Pox, but had it so
lightly that he was confined scarcely a single day; the two
next were not afflicted at all with the disease—these were the
three that had been vaccinated. The two youngest were
seized with Small Pox almost simultaneously, both died, and
lay dead in the house at the same time—these were the two
that had not been vaccinated." In 1860, 36 fell victims to
this dire disease. Measles, like Small Pox, declined in
virulence—from 112 to 17. It frequently happens, as was
noticed last year, "that in years when, or localities where,
Small Pox has not been prevalent, the mortality from Measles
is very small, but when Small Pox has extended, and put on
the epidemic form, the mortality from Measles becomes very
great." Scarlatina and Diptheria numbered 16 fewer than
in the 12 months before. One death from Scarlatina took
place at the age of 44. But Whooping Cough—which was
the ruling epidemic of the year, and most rife in the Hackney
Road and next in the Town—advanced from 59 to 151.
Diarrhoea advanced also from 66 to 90, and Typhus from 61
to 65. Out of the whole population Small Pox swept off 1
out of every 8758, Measles out of 6182, Scarlatina and Diptheria
out of 1313, Whooping Cough out of 629, Diarrhoea
out of 1167, and Typhus one out of every 1616. Measured
by percentages on the deaths, the minimum rate of 18.65
obtained in Bethnal Green, that of 18.79 in the East Districts
and in London as well. Bethnal Green also had the lowest
rate in Measles and Scarlatina. The several variations in the
distinctive signs are seen in Tables 3 and 4.
The second class is composed of 25 deaths from Hemorrhage
and Dropsy in different parts, of 13 from Abscess and
Ulcer, of 22 from Mortification and Cancer, and of 4 from
Gout.
