—notwithstanding the addition of 15,554 Births in excess of
the Deaths and the erection of 1514 houses since 1851—the
efflux of population was greater from than the influx to Bethnal
Green. These facts in the late Census arc shown in
Tables A. and B.

TABLE B.

Sub-Districts.POPULATION, 1851-61.
By excess of Births Over Deaths.Loss on Natural Increase.Increase by Immigration.
Hackney Road284042106..
Green26110..5679
Church26201673..
Town250323546..
Total10574763255679

Comparing these you will see that in the Hackney Road,
Church and Town, the Population falls 6325 short of the
Excess of the Births, and that, although 5679 immigrants
besides its birth-excess accrued to the Green, yet in the entire
Parish, the Census-Return, or positive increase (as in Table A)
figures 646 less than the natural increase or the surplus
amount of Births over Deaths. Considering that there have
been superadded the Model Buildings of Miss Burdett
Coutts, various streets in and around Hackney Road, a new
neighbourhood between Old Bethnal and Bcthnal Green
Roads, with numerous Roads and Streets in the eastern or
suburban division, the circumstance is curious and contrary
to what we might a priori expect. In the antecedent decennium
' out of a total increase of 15,991, the Excess of Births
over Deaths was 10,697, the immigration-addition 5294, or
529'4 per year.'
