May 20th, 1862.
Rev. Sir and Gentlemen,
In the following Report on Bethnal Green,
I have the honour to submit consecutively, its Population,
its Vital Statistics and Co-Relations, its Pauper Health, and
its Sanitary Operations during the year 1861.
1. Population.
Between the Censuses of 1851-61, the Population of Bethnal
Green thus progressed:—
Sub-Districts. | POPULATION. | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
1851. | 1861. | Decennial Increase. | Ratio per Cent. | |
Hackney Road | 23910 | 26298 | 2388 | 9 • 98 |
Green | 23555 | 31789 | 8234 | 34 • 95 |
Church | 21787 | 25528 | 3741 | 17 • 17 |
Town | 20941 | 21486 | 545 | 2 • 60 |
Total | 90193 | 105101 | 14908 |
As happened in the City and throughout London, our
"rate of increase decreased." It was less than the increase
of 1841-51, and less than the Excess of Births over Deaths.
"The Population of London increased at the rate of 1.975
per cent, annually in the 10 years 1841-51, and at the rate of
1.722 per cent. annually in the 10 years 1851-61." In
Bethnal Green the rate of increase in 1851-61 somewhat
exceeded 16, or annually 1.6 per cent.; while in 1841-51 it
was above 21, or annually over 2.1 per cent. Consequently
