Bearing in mind the fact that sulphur dioxide readings in this Borough
indicate a worse position than in the City, and that conditions in one
Borough will affect neighbouring areas, the Council felt that powers similar
to those obtained by the City should extend to the whole of Greater London.
Accordingly the London Borough is Association were asked to consider the inclusion
of a provision in a future Greater London Council (General Powers)
Bill requiring new furnace installations to burn oil with a sulphur content
of 1 per cent or less and to require existing furnaces which bum high sulphur
content oil to chaage over within a specified period.
RODENT CONTROL
The plained programme of sewer treatments was continued during the
year, and although there was an Increase in the number of infestations
of business premises, those in domestic premises lessened and the overall
picture is of a fall in the total number of infestations of rats and mice.
Experiments were carried out during the latter part of the year in the use
of tracking dusts as an alternative to the use of warfarin in domestic
premises, but some time will be required to evaluate the success of the
experiment.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food carried out a survey
on the problem of mice in London and assistance in the survey was given hy
this Council by the completion of 500 survey cards.

A total of 4,482 complaints were received and 4,311 inspections carried
out.
RAG FLOCK & OTHER FILLING MATERIALS ACT, 1951
This Act requires the registration of premises upon which specified
materials are used in the process of upholstering furniture, the stuffing
or lining of bedding or toys. There are twenty-five premises registered
in the Borough. There are three premises where these specified materials
are actually manufactured, stored or offered for sale and these are
licensed annually.
