A total of 125 disorders were detected as follows:-
Breast 2
Genital system
Vulva 3
Vagina 25
Cervix 48
Uterus and Ovaries 15
Abdomen and Perineum 9
Urinary Astern 4
Miscellaneous 19
73 of these abnormalities did not warrant referral to the general
practitioner but the women converned received advice from the doctor at the
Mobile Unit at the time of the visit.
In the cases of the 52 abnormalities which warranted referral, the
general practitioners were contacted and 29 replies were received confirming
the following diagnoses: -
Lipoma of the breast 1
Vulval dystrophy 1 (Referred to St. Bartholomews Hospital)
Vaginitis 4 (1 referred to the German Hospital)
Cervical polyp. 5 (2 referred to the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson
Hospital, l referred to the Metropolitm Hospital)
Cervical erosion 6 (3 subsequently cauterised, l referred to St.
Bartholomews Hospital)
Cervical prolapse 1 (Referred for hysterectomy at Hackney Hospital)
Fibroid 1
External haemorrhoid 1
cystocoele 1
Monilia 1
No apparent defect 3
Refused treatment 4
Two cases of a typical squamous cells were found and repeat smears
were recommended to be taken after a period of three months. The repeat
smears revealed no malignant cells but in one case further
hospital investigations revealed another condition requiring a hysterectomy.
