CARE OF MOTHERS AND CHILDREN
ANTE NATAL CARE
The amount of ante natal care provided by the Local Authority in Hackney
continues to decrease and the majority of women attending Health Centres
for antenatal care are seen hy the general practitioner obstetrician holding
a session in the Centre. This arrangement is in line with the recommendations
of the Peel Report.
Arrangements were made for the general practitioner obstetrician to
attend women who previously would have been seen by the Centre doctor and
in cases where it was not possible to make a claim on the Inner London
Executive Council an item of service payment would be made by the Department.
Attendances at the Lower Clapton Maternal & Child Health Centre, the
only Centre where the Centre doctor held an ante natal session were as
follows:-

Education classes have been held for expectant mothers. The subjects
dealt with include the education of women for labour, the care of their
health during pregnancy and also many aspects of the care of their young
babies such as sewing and dress-making. Attendances at these classes have
continued to drop due to the falling birth rate.
The number of women who attended these sessions during 1972 is shown
