INFECTIOUS AND CONTAGIOUS DISEASES

The following cases of infectious and contagious diseases were notified:-

There were TWO DEATHS associated with notified cases of infectious
disease both being posthumous notifications of encephalitis, and the causes
of death were certified as follows -
I Acute encephalitis - Female aged 2 years
II Inclusion body encephalitis - Male aged 17 years
DIPHTHERIA For the tenth successive year no case of Diphtheria was
notified and since 1951 only one case has occurred in this Borough
Three suspected cases were admitted to Hospital where the ultimate
diagnoses proved to be. -
Tonsillitis 2
Glandular Fever 1

In England and Wales 33 cases were notified of which two proved fatal, Diphtheria notifications and deaths in England and Wales for the past

ten years:-

DYSENTERY (Sonne) Of the 474 cases notified 61 were associated with
day nurseries In the previous year 381 cases were notified and there were
48 notifications in 1961
DYSENTERY (Flexner) Two cases were notified Thirteen were associated
toith day nurseries.
ENCEPHALITIS (Post infectious) Two posthumous notifications were
received
MENINGOCOCCAL INFECTION The two cases notified made satisfactory
recoveries
MEASLES Of the 1.386 cases notified 128 were admitted to hospital
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM Seventeen of the 23 cases notified were babies
born to Hackney mothers and six were babies of women normally resident
outside the borough
