PUERPERAL PYREXIA. Of a total of 58 cases of Puerperal Pyrexia 57 were
associated with hospital confinements, and one case with a home confinement
only 33 of the total number of cases related to Hackney residents.
SCARLET FEVER. Notifications of this disease numbered 165 as compared with
56 in the previous year and 70 in 1962; 20 cases were admitted to hospital,
SMALLPOX. No case of smallpox occurred and there were no contacts requiring
surveillance.
WHOOPING COUGH The number of cases notified was 93 as compared with 273
in 1963 and 59 in 1962.

PUBLIC HEALTH BACTERIOLOGY. The 7,370 specimens submitted for examination to the Public Health Laboratory were reported on as follows:-

The two specimens of faeces submitted which were positive for salmonella
paratyphi were in respect of a chronic carrier, from whom specimens of urine
and faeces are submitted for examination every three months.
In addition to the above, 5 samples of food were submitted for bacterio
logical examination in connection with the investigation of cases of food
poisoning, food complaints, etc.
TUBERCULOSIS
Of the 159 notifications of Tuberculosis received, 138 related to
pulmonary infection and 21 to non-pulmonary. The attack rate per thousand
of the population for all forms of Tuberculosis notified for the first time
(109 new cases) was 0.66 as compared with 0.59 in 1963 and 0.53 in 1962.
