INFECTIOUS AND CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
The following cases of infectious and contagious diseases were notified:-
Dysentery 346 Pneumonia (Acute Primary) 6

Meningococcal Infection 3 Typhoid 5
Ophthalmia Neonatorum 14 Tuberculosis 109

The TWO DEATHS associated with notified cases of infectious disease
were:-
Measles 1. (Female aged 2 years)
Meningoencephalitis 1. (Female aged 4 years)
DIPHTHERIA. For the eleventh successive year no case of Diphtheria was
notified, and since 1951 only one case has occurred in this Borough.
In England and Wales 29 cases were notified of which none proved fatal.
DYSENTERY (Sonne). Of the 346 cases notified 23 were associated with day
nurseries. In the previous year 474 cases were notified and there were 381
notifications in 1961.
DYSENTERY (Flexner). One case was notified.
ENCEPHALITIS (Post infectious). The one case notified made a satisfactory
recovery.
MENINGOCOCCAL INFECTION. There were two cases notified, one made a satisfactory
recovery, the other was a posthumous notification.
MEASLES, Of the 990 cases notified 134 were admitted to hospital.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM Thirteen of the 14 cases notified were babies born
to Hackney mothers and one was a baby of a woman normally resident outside the
borough.
POLIOMYELITIS (Infantile paralysis). There were no cases notified during
the year.
