The undermentioned houses, parts of which were the subject of Closing
Orders, were demolished and the Closing Orders cancelled:-
8A Amhurst Park - Basement front and back (west) rooms and front and
back (east) rooms.
41 Lea Bridge Road - Basement front and back rooms.
Proceedings were taken against the owner and also the occupier of one
house for permitting or using rooms in contravention of a Closing Order; both
defendants were fined, but no costs were awarded.
Part III
(Clearance Areas)
SECTION 42 (Power to declare an area to be a clearance area). In my report
for 1960 I stated that as their contribution to the quinquennial clearance
programme to be undertaken jointly by the London County Council and the Borough
Council in the period 1961/1965, the Borough Council would deal with 179 houses by way of clearance.

The first of the clearance areas included in this programme were represented during 1961 as follows -

The Clearance Orders made in respect of the first three areas were confirmed
by the Minister without modification The Minister also confirmed the

Part IV
(Abatement of overcrowding)
SECTION 76 (Duty of local authority to inspect and to make reports and proposals
as to overcrowding). During the year 55 new cases of overcrowding were added
to the 819 overcrowded dwellings recorded in the department at the end of 1960.
Overcrowding was abated in 28 dwellings, 25 families being rehoused by the
Borough Council and two by the London County Council; in the remaining one
dwelling the occupants found other accommodation.
SECTION 78 (Offences in relation to overcrowding), Three notices were served,
two of which were complied with.
SECTION 86 (Duty of medical officers to furnish particulars of overcrowding).
The following is a summary of the position as recorded in the department with
regard to overcrowding during and at the end of the yearr-
(a) (i) Number of dwellings overcrowded at the end of the year., 846

(b) Number of new cases of overcrowding reported during the year. 55
(c) (i) Number of cases of overcrowding relieved during the year 28

(iv) Number of families rehoused by the Borough Council 25
(v) Number of families finding other accommodation 1
