MASS MINIATURE RADIOGRAPHY.
The North East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board's
Mass Radiography Unit situated at St. Mary's Hospital, Plaistow,
E.13, is now responsible for Mass Radiography work in the Borough
of Hackney, and a mobile unit from this centre carried out a survey
in the borough from 9th October—15th November, 1951.
Having regard to the size of the district, it was considered
desirable to divide the time between two locations, so as to minimise
travelling difficulties for examinees. This was made possible
by the ready co-operation of the Borough Council in permitting
the community halls at Nisbet House and Wigan House Housing
Estates to be used as temporary headquarters of the unit for the
periods October 9th—25th and October 30th—November 15th
respectively.
The object of the survey was to cover the industrial population,
school leavers, and the general public, and attendances from
these sources totalled 8,546. There were 21 cases of active tuberculosis
disclosed by the survey—an overall incidence of 2.46 per
1,000 examinations. This compares favourably with the National
figure for Mass Radiography, which is over three per 1,000. The
incidence was higher in female than in male examinees, the respective
figures being 3.18 and 1.78 per 1,000.
