and practicable. The Ministry draw attention, however, to
Section 16 (1) of the Food and Drugs Act, 1938 (dealer's name and
address to be legibly displayed on vehicles) and the Ministry state
that this provision, together with the requirements of Section 14
(registration of premises) and the public health safeguards under
Section 13, and under the Ice Cream (Heat Treatment) Regulations,
1947, already afford a substantial measure of protection to the
consumer.''
Premises used for the manufacture, storage and sale of icecream
or for the preparation or manufacture of sausages or potted,
pressed, pickled or preserved food are required to be registered by
Section 14 of the Food and Drugs Act, 1938. At the end of the year
the number of premises remaining on the register was:—
Ice-Cream 253
Sausages, etc. 160
Street Traders in Food.—A further increase in the number of
licences issued to street traders has caused a greater degree of concentration
in the five market streets, calling for daily inspection on
the part of the Food Inspectors whose services are always available
to those traders having any doubt about the suitability for human
consumption of any of the commodities in which they deal.
Pharmacy and Poisons.—The names and addresses of 155
persons remained on the Council's list of persons entitled to sell
poisons under Part 2 of the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, 1933, and
Pharmacy and Medicines Act, 1941. No action was necessary in
respect of any offence under the Act.
Food Poisoning.—No cases of food poisoning were notified
during the year.
